How do you distinguish essential work conditions from preferences?
Describe the practical consequence of each unmet condition, then separate essentials, negotiable arrangements and preferences. Revisit the classification when your responsibilities or circumstances change.
Test conditions through consequences
- List expectations about time, location and collaboration.
- Describe what would happen if each were absent.
- Identify acceptable alternatives before marking a condition essential.
Replace vague labels with questions
Flexible work may mean collecting a child at a fixed time or simply preferring a later start. The first needs a specific scheduling discussion; the second may allow several arrangements. A cultural slogan cannot confirm either. Ask about the actual practice.
What to do with your observation
| Observation | Next action |
|---|---|
| Clear consequence with no workable alternative | Keep it essential and ask a specific question. |
| Preferred form without a necessary consequence | Treat it as a preference when comparing options. |

Does having many essentials mean being too demanding?
Check whether workable alternatives exist. The number alone cannot establish whether the requirements are reasonable.
