How do you repair a joke that made someone uncomfortable?

繁體中文版

The Weekend Club · Practical editorial guide · 2026-09-21

Stop extending the joke, acknowledge the specific problem, apologise briefly and change your behaviour. Calling the person sensitive or saying it was only a joke does not undo its effect. Do not demand immediate forgiveness.

Stop before explaining

  1. Avoid repeating or elaborating the punchline.
  2. Identify what you are retracting or apologising for.
  3. Give the person room to continue, change topics or pause.

Repair is not another performance of the joke

You joke about someone's hobby and they say they dislike it. Acknowledge that using their interest as the target was inappropriate, then stop. Repeating the line to the whole table makes them the focus again. If there is a practical consequence beyond the conversation, address that separately rather than assuming an apology resolves everything.

A filled example

Worked apology: I am sorry I made your hobby the target of that joke. I take it back and will not continue with it.

Evidence and scope

This is original everyday guidance. Serious harm cannot necessarily be repaired with one sentence, and an apology may not be accepted.
