How do you decline to join a joke at someone else’s expense?
Do not add to it, and state your own preference not to make that subject a joke. Avoid declaring that the person targeted is fine or must be hurt. Preserve their choice to change topics, leave or speak for themselves.
Stop contributing to the pile-on
- Stop adding punchlines or details.
- State a brief boundary in your own terms.
- Offer another topic or seek appropriate help when needed.
Do not turn intervention into another spectacle
If a participant is repeatedly mocked for not knowing an activity, you can say you do not want to joke about that. Do not publicly require them to describe their feelings to justify your position. Avoid recording the exchange as content. If the situation becomes threatening, prioritise leaving or obtaining suitable support over winning an argument.
