How do you end a good conversation without inventing an excuse?
At a pause, clearly say you are preparing to leave and thank the person for something specific. Offer future contact only if you mean it; a fabricated call or emergency is unnecessary.
Make the ending understandable
You might mention that their organizing example was interesting, then say you are going to collect your things. If you are heading home, say so. Leave a moment for the other person to respond. Avoid announcing your departure and immediately opening a large new question, which makes it unclear whether the exchange is ending.
Separate courtesy from a commitment
If you genuinely want to continue, ask whether they would like to exchange an appropriate contact method. Otherwise, appreciation is enough. If the conversation continues, calmly repeat that you need to leave without criticizing the topic. The wording here is an original editorial exercise, not a universal formula.
A worksheet you can use
Something I appreciated: __. My actual departure plan: __. Is there a real next step? __. Combine these into a short sentence and remove promises you do not intend to keep.
Must I exchange contact information?
No. A pleasant brief exchange can end there without an obligation to continue.
Evidence and scope
Tone depends on the setting and culture. If you feel unsafe, you do not need to wait for an ideal polite moment to leave.
UCSF guidance recommends signaling an ending clearly. These original examples are not a tested intervention or an author-reviewed script. Sara Ayazi, UCSF (2019), How do I gracefully exit a conversation at a networking event?
