Answer a Casual Freelance Price Question

繁體中文版

The Weekend Club · Practical editorial guide · 2026-09-24

Explain the work conditions that affect price and how you would establish a formal scope. A casual conversation need not become an immediate commitment. Avoid a deliberately low number just to secure a follow-up; clarify deliverables, revisions and timing first.

Three practical steps

  1. Ask what outcome or deliverable is needed, not only the budget.
  2. Name two or three workload factors, such as volume, supplied material and revisions.
  3. If the person wants to proceed, collect requirements with permission and provide a clear quotation.

Explaining how you quote is a useful answer

You can say you need the scope and deadline to avoid quoting something you cannot deliver. If you give a range, explain its assumptions rather than implying it covers every project. Do not assume a person at dinner is necessarily a buyer.

A filled example

Illustrative example: a photographer is asked the price of a set of images. They clarify use, session length and delivery volume, then offer to review requirements rather than invent an all-inclusive price at the table.

Will I lose the opportunity by not quoting immediately?

Some people may not continue, but clarifying scope can prevent misunderstanding. Make the next step simple without using an unreliable low price to retain every contact.
