How do you offer help to a new community within your real capacity?
Check the actual need, then offer a specific task, available period and endpoint. A bounded commitment is easier to agree on than unlimited availability.
Match ability to need
If you can organize information once, state the scope and deadline rather than promising to run an event. The group may need another skill or no help right now. A declined offer does not determine your value.
Include the whole commitment
Count travel, preparation and cleanup before accepting. Communicate changes early. Do not independently obtain member lists, accounts or sensitive information; follow the role's proper process.
