How can you test a different career without quitting your job?
Try one recurring task from the role using public or invented materials, then produce a small deliverable. Record your reaction to the work and the conditions you have not tested before drawing conclusions about a career change.
Translate a job title into a task
Wanting to become a curator is difficult to test. Arranging five publicly viewable works into a proposed exhibition layout, with reasons for your choices, is more concrete. Read current public role descriptions and identify recurring verbs such as editing, interviewing or coordinating. Choose a task with materials you can legitimately use. Define the output and a time limit before starting; keep employer information and real client work outside the exercise.
Separate enjoyment from fit
Imagine that you enjoy selecting the works but dislike annotating their dimensions. Record those reactions separately. Ask a practitioner how much of the actual role involves logistics and documentation. Your exercise says little about pay, scheduling, management or sustained workload. A useful second trial might focus on the necessary task you wanted to skip, rather than repeating only the attractive part.
A worksheet you can use
Role: __. Recurring task: __. Materials: __. Deliverable and deadline: __. Afterwards: what I would repeat; what I avoided; which working conditions remain unknown.
Do I need a full course first?
Start with a safe task that does not require professional credentials. If basic vocabulary prevents you from attempting it, learn that specific material before investing in a longer course.
Evidence and scope
This is an exploratory exercise, not a recommendation to resign or a promise of employment. Regulated tasks require appropriate qualifications.
