How do you compare two career interests fairly?
Give each interest a small practical task with a comparable time budget and record both using the same questions. Compare actual experiences rather than a polished description of one career against a difficult day in the other.
Set the comparison before starting
Suppose you are considering editing and event planning. Spend two hours outlining an interview article and two hours drafting a small event agenda, using public or invented material. Include revision time in both. Neither exercise reproduces a job; the point is to give both options something observable. Keep a note of which task uses skills you already possess.
Record friction as well as enthusiasm
For each trial, describe the most absorbing part, the part you postponed, and the help you needed. Editing might feel easier while planning feels more novel. Those observations do not need an immediate winner. You could next edit an unfamiliar subject or work through the logistical confirmations in the event plan. That helps distinguish interest in the work from comfort or novelty.
A worksheet you can use
For A and B, record: time used; output; absorbing moment; avoided task; support needed; conditions under which I would repeat it. Circle one untested condition that could change the comparison.
Should I choose whichever trial felt better?
First check differences in difficulty, prior skill and your circumstances that day. A targeted follow-up can be more informative than treating one reaction as a verdict.
Evidence and scope
Two exercises cannot establish long-term fit. Qualifications, working conditions and personal responsibilities require separate assessment.
