How can you tell whether group study helped your own understanding?
Separate independent attempts from discussion. Save your initial answer and questions, then try a similar small problem alone afterwards to identify where you still depend on prompts.
Preserve your starting point
For a short argument, each person can identify the claim and supporting reason before comparing interpretations. Keep the original version so you can see what another person's explanation changed. An error is useful evidence, not something to erase retrospectively.
Check independently afterwards
Use a different example to explain the same concept. If you can only repeat the discussion's wording, return to the point you cannot apply. This is not a public intelligence test and requires no shared scores or monitoring agreement.
A worksheet you can use
Initial answer: __. Uncertainty: __. Revision during discussion: __. Independent explanation with a new example: __. Remaining question: __.
Isn't receiving the answer faster?
It can be. Afterwards, explain the reasoning or try a related example to distinguish recognition from independent use.
