How do you share a personal preference without presenting it as fact?

The Weekend Club · Practical editorial guide · 2026-09-21

Explain what you like and which detail shaped your response. Do not turn a preference into a rule everyone should accept. A specific subjective reason offers more to discuss than automatic agreement or judging someone else's taste.

Place the judgment within your experience

  1. Choose a detail you actually encountered.
  2. Explain its effect on you.
  3. Allow another view without requiring anyone to defend their preference.

Specific does not mean objective

You prefer a small exhibition because you can spend time examining materials. That does not establish that large exhibitions are shallow. Describe this particular experience; if you have not visited the other exhibition, avoid using it to devalue another person's choice. The distinction preserves both a clear view and honest limits.

A filled example

Worked view: I liked the small gallery because I could examine the paper texture slowly. I have not visited the larger exhibition, so I cannot compare them.

A worksheet you can use

My preference: __. Observed detail: __. Effect on me: __. What I do not know: __.

Should I say everything is good to avoid disagreement?

You may have a preference. Marking it as subjective makes your experience clearer rather than removing your position.

Evidence and scope

This original exercise provides no universal scale for artistic quality and does not justify judging experiences you have not had.
