Check a Job Offer Beyond Its Title

繁體中文版

The Weekend Club · Practical editorial guide · 2026-09-24

Turn the reasons you want to leave your current job into questions before accepting a new role. A different title or brand does not establish different tasks, hours or management. Check with the hiring team and potential colleagues, recording promises, examples and remaining unknowns separately.

Three practical steps

  1. List three conditions you want the move to change.
  2. Ask how those conditions work in practice, including who sets priorities and handles urgent requests.
  3. Compare answers with formal role information and clarify essential gaps before deciding.

Ask for a recent example rather than a culture slogan

Asking how a team handled its most recent schedule change can reveal more than asking whether it is flexible. Do not transfer a friend’s experience of one team to an entire company. A pleasant interview is also not a complete picture of the working week.

A filled example

Illustrative example: a marketer wants to leave frequent last-minute overtime. When a new employer describes good work-life balance, they ask about peak-season scheduling, cover and responsibilities rather than accepting solely because the brand is well known.

Can someone I meet at dinner assess the employer for me?

Ask whether they have relevant experience and clarify when and where it occurred. Do not request confidential information or turn one story into a company-wide fact.
