Industry event or cross-industry meal: where should you spend job-search time?

繁體中文版

The Weekend Club · Practical editorial guide · 2026-09-22

For a defined role and industry, prioritise relevant professional events and hiring channels. When exploring directions, a mixed-background meal may expose you to different working lives. A general meal is not a recruitment fair.

Start with these three steps

  1. Identify whether you lack direction, skill evidence or vacancy information.
  2. Read the actual agenda and purpose.
  3. Keep time for formal applications rather than replacing them with attendance.

The distinction that changes your decision

If you need vacancies on a particular technical team, meeting assorted backgrounds may be inefficient. If you do not yet know which work interests you, a narrowly specialised event may close your exploration too soon.

A filled example

Someone targeting data engineering starts with technical events and employer careers pages. Someone who only knows their current role feels wrong uses a cross-industry conversation to form more specific questions.

What to do with your observation

Do more events mean a better chance of a job?Attendance alone cannot establish that. Look for reliable new information, stronger evidence of ability or completed suitable applications. Activity is not the same as progress.

Evidence and scope

This is an original editorial decision guide. Examples are hypothetical, not testimonials. Participation, another person’s interest and eventual outcomes are separate questions. The source supplies context, not validation of these scripts, exercises or WKND outcomes. No outside expert reviewed or endorsed this guide. LinkedIn research cannot establish the job-search effects of an offline meal.
