How do you ask your network for useful help after losing a job?

Separate vacancy information, resume feedback and introductions. Ask an appropriate person for one of these at a time. Explain your direction and timing without making friends responsible for arranging employment.

Start with these three steps

  1. Prepare a shareable description of your target and experience.
  2. Choose one small request that fits the person’s knowledge.
  3. Record contacts and next steps so urgency does not become repeated, shifting requests.

The distinction that changes your decision

You can state urgency, but it does not replace fit. Some people understand resumes, some know an industry and some can only listen. Let them choose what they can offer while continuing direct applications.

A filled example

“I am looking for customer operations roles and want to check whether this paragraph explains my process-improvement work. Could you read that section?” This is clearer than asking for editing, vacancies and referrals together.

Evidence and scope

This is an original editorial decision guide. Examples are hypothetical, not testimonials. Participation, another person’s interest and eventual outcomes are separate questions. The source supplies context, not validation of these scripts, exercises or WKND outcomes. No outside expert reviewed or endorsed this guide. LinkedIn research cannot establish the job-search effects of an offline meal.
