How do you finish a thought after being interrupted?
Say that you have one point left, complete it when there is a pause, then return the turn. The aim is to restore a speaking opportunity, not infer whether the interruption was deliberately disrespectful.
Limit what you need to recover
- Identify the unfinished core sentence.
- Calmly ask to complete that point.
- Finish and pause so the other person can continue rather than competing through volume.
You need not recover every background detail
During a discussion of a walk, someone moves to equipment before you mention a changed meeting place. Restore the location first. An incidental story detail can wait or be dropped. If someone repeatedly refuses space, stating a boundary or leaving that exchange remains an option. You do not have to make the interruption look harmless.
A filled example
Worked phrase: Let me finish the meeting point: it is now the east exit. Then, which piece of equipment were you mentioning?
What to do with your observation
| Observation | Next action |
|---|---|
| The missing information affects understanding | Ask to complete the core sentence. |
| The person repeatedly refuses your turn | State a boundary rather than competing indefinitely. |
A worksheet you can use
Unfinished point: __. Turn-restoring phrase: __. Closing sentence: __. Return to their topic: __.
Can I simply say that I was not finished?
Yes. Adding the limited scope can help: I just want to finish the meeting-point detail.
Evidence and scope
