How do you choose an industry event for career exploration?

Write one work question you do not yet understand, then check whether the programme can address it. Speaker fame, attendance and business cards describe only parts of an event; they do not establish its usefulness to you.

Start with a learning gap

  1. Name a specific unknown.
  2. Compare topics, intended audience and interaction format.
  3. Choose an affordable event close to the question. To understand how product roles collaborate with sales, look for cross-functional examples rather than only a fashionable job title.

Review the programme critically

Record the cases you expect and perspectives likely to be absent. Recruitment presentations may be useful, but frame them as employer information rather than independent industry research. Afterwards, record what was actually answered and leave remaining questions open for other sources.

A worksheet you can use

Unknown: __. Relevant session: __. Event purpose: __. Expected example: __. Missing perspective: __. Actual takeaway: __.

Is a famous speaker always better?

No. Check the connection to your question before treating reputation as a deciding factor.
