How do you start reading a new subject when the terminology is overwhelming?
Select a few terms that block understanding of the current text and record a definition, example and source for each. Avoid building a dictionary of the entire field before returning to the reading.
Choose words that affect the meaning
Mark unfamiliar terms, then prioritize those that recur or change the conclusion. Seek original documentation, educational sources or the author’s definition. If a word has different meanings across fields, preserve the context in which this text uses it rather than treating one explanation as universal.
Check the definition with an example
For a term such as audience, name the specific reader and need of a short piece you are writing rather than copying a generic definition. Add an example outside that scope to test the boundary. Then reread the original passage. Remaining confusion may concern the argument or background rather than vocabulary alone.

Term: __. Context here: __. Source link: __. My explanation: __. Fitting example: __. Non-example: __. Start with at most five terms, then return to the text.
What if the definition is still confusing?
Find a concrete example or more introductory material and record the unresolved part rather than pretending mastery.
