How do you trace a statistic in a social carousel to its original source?

Record the full claim and named source, then locate the original report, table, population and period. Finding the same number is insufficient if the carousel changes what that number describes.

Follow the citation backwards

  1. Save the complete sentence.
  2. Open the reference or search the report title.
  3. Locate the relevant table and surrounding explanation. A claim that most people enjoy an activity might come from a voluntary survey of attendees rather than a sample of all adults.

Keep missing evidence visible

Separate reposts from the original report. If articles cite one another without reaching underlying data, record that the original source remains unfound. Do not invent a plausible percentage to fill the gap. Before sharing, remove the unverified number or frame the issue as an unanswered question rather than a settled finding.

A worksheet you can use

Carousel claim: __. Citation chain: __. Original table: __. Population: __. Period: __. Supported wording: __.

Does finding the report cover count?

It confirms a report exists. Without the relevant table, the particular statistic remains unverified.

Evidence and scope

This checklist does not replace statistical review. Do not improvise explanations of unfamiliar estimation methods.
