How do you note a recommendation without turning someone into a source to be recorded?

繁體中文版

The Weekend Club · Practical editorial guide · 2026-09-21

Explain that you want to save a public title or search cue, confirm it briefly and return to the exchange. Recommending a book does not imply consent to record private stories, make audio recordings or publish a retelling.

Save only what you need to find the resource

  1. Name the item you want to note.
  2. Confirm necessary details such as spelling or author.
  3. Leave unrelated personal information out and return to conversation.

Separate the resource from the person sharing it

Someone mentions an essay collection from a small publisher. The title and author are useful; their work difficulties or family story need not accompany the note. If you later want to quote them publicly, ask separately about that use. Willingness to converse does not grant publication permission or make every part of the exchange research material.

A filled example

Worked request: I would like to find that book. May I note just its title and author? I will leave the private part of your story out.

Yes. Mark uncertainty if you cannot recall a detail, and do not present your reconstruction as the person's exact words.
