How do you set boundaries for career exploration before a side project takes over?
Write the time available, resources excluded and review date. Reduce the exploration to one informative output. A boundary should let you stop actual work, not merely remind you to avoid exhaustion.
Put constraints into the scope
- List existing responsibilities.
- Identify available time and materials.
- Decide which question this round answers. To explore editing, revise a short text you own rather than accepting an entire unpaid publication to demonstrate enthusiasm.
Handle requests to expand
Return to the original agreement when someone proposes more work and discuss any expansion separately. At review, ask whether the information gained justifies the effort. Narrow, change or end work that no longer adds useful information. Time already spent is not the sole reason to continue. Keep the boundary visible alongside the deliverable, where it can guide decisions.
A worksheet you can use

Can I explore with very limited capacity?
Start with public material and a small private exercise. Postponing is also valid; basic responsibilities need not be sacrificed.
Evidence and scope
This is not employment, contract or personal-finance advice. Confidentiality and conflict-of-interest requirements still apply.
