How do you verify that an unfamiliar book recommended by AI actually exists?

Check the title, author and edition separately against a publisher, author site or library catalogue. Once the book is identified, check whether accessible material supports the AI's description of its contents.

Verify the bibliographic identity

  1. Search the full title and author.
  2. Find a publisher or catalogue record.
  3. Compare original titles, translations and editions. A similar title by another author is not confirmation of the recommended book.

Verify the reason for recommending it

If the answer attributes a method to the book, look for a lawful contents page, author introduction or excerpt. A real catalogue record does not verify a claimed chapter or quotation. Label introduction-only access honestly, and leave an unsupported recommendation pending rather than repeating imagined wording as the author's own. Keep the record so another reader can check it too.

A worksheet you can use

Suggested title: __. Author: __. Catalogue URL: __. Edition: __. Accessible scope: __. Description checked: __.

Does an unsuccessful search prove the book is fake?

No. Translation or spelling may differ. Keep it unverified before buying or citing it.

Evidence and scope

An AI answer is a starting point for checking; this worksheet makes no accuracy claim about a specific tool.

DIG introduces checking beyond a website. This is not a lesson translation. Digital Inquiry Group — Teaching Lateral Reading
