What can you notice at your first public rehearsal?

Confirm public access and venue rules, then observe how a performance is adjusted: restart points, communication or transitions. Pauses during rehearsal do not establish failure, and a fragment cannot determine the quality of the finished show.

Watch the making process

  1. Check official participation and recording rules.
  2. Choose one process detail.
  3. Record visible changes while leaving unexplained causes as questions.

Avoid inventing performers' inner states

A musical passage is repeated three times. You can note that each attempt begins at a different point, but cannot conclude that a performer is nervous or unskilled. If an organised question session exists, ask what the adjustment addressed. Otherwise, let the work continue rather than interrupting it to complete your observation. A useful note can retain uncertainty.

A filled example

Worked note: The passage was repeated three times, starting earlier each time. Cause unknown. During a permitted question session, ask which transition the adjustment addressed.

Evidence and scope

Many rehearsals are private. Follow ticketing, entry and recording conditions and stay outside restricted areas.

The public introduction concerns creative exploration. Not a full-book reading. Julia Cameron — The Artist’s Date Book: public book introduction
