How should you ask to bring an extra guest to a small gathering?

繁體中文版

The Weekend Club · Practical editorial guide · 2026-09-18

Ask the host privately before promising the invitation or arriving together. State the additional number and relationship, leaving room for a refusal. Your invitation does not automatically include another place.

Check before committing

  1. Read whether companions are explicitly welcome.
  2. If unclear, ask early about one additional guest.
  3. Forward the invitation only after an explicit yes. You might explain that you would enjoy attending with a housemate but can follow the original arrangement if the list is fixed.

Do not infer capacity from chairs

Purpose, cost, venue terms or discussion arrangements may limit attendance even when a chair looks available. Accept a refusal without lobbying for an exception or circulating the host's reasons. A separate occasion is another option; different invitations do not have to be merged.

A worksheet you can use

Invitation scope: __. Additional number: __. Request: __. Explicit reply: __. Message after confirmation: __.

Does silence mean agreement?

No. Keep the confirmed arrangement or ask once more briefly.

Evidence and scope

This is invitation etiquette, not a statement of any event's companion or ticket policy.
