Side Business: Research Conversation or Sales Call?
Decide whether you are learning about a problem or offering an already defined service. Explain a research purpose when asking about experience, and disclose a commercial purpose when selling. Someone describing a problem has not agreed to buy.
Three practical steps
- Identify whether the unknown concerns demand, solution fit or purchase conditions.
- State the purpose and time request in your invitation.
- If a collaboration possibility emerges, ask before turning the interaction into a commercial discussion.
Permission to share experience is not permission for a proposal
A person may discuss a process without purchasing authority or a budget. Respect the agreed purpose and do not turn their comments into an unauthorized testimonial. Summarize problem patterns without exposing private company or personal details.
A filled example
Illustrative example: a developer asks a shop owner about a recent booking process. When a relevant problem emerges, they ask whether a separate service discussion would be welcome rather than unexpectedly sending a quotation.
What to do with your observation
| Observation | Next action |
|---|---|
| You are still checking whether a problem exists | Ask about recent instances and current approaches before pitching. |
| The person asks about buying an offer | Explicitly move into a commercial conversation with consent. |
A worksheet you can use
Purpose: ____; unknown question: ____; invitation wording: ____; intended information use: ____; permission needed to discuss a sale: ____.
What if the person asks how to buy during research?
You can answer, while explaining whether the service is ready, its scope and the next step. Do not present a proposed feature as already available.
