How do you recover after your attention drifts during a conversation?

繁體中文版

The Weekend Club · Practical editorial guide · 2026-09-21

Acknowledge that you missed part of the exchange, identify the last point you understood and ask for the key missing part if the person is willing. Avoid an automatic agreement followed by an answer to a question nobody asked.

Make the repair specific

  1. Stop guessing what you missed.
  2. Name the last clear content cue.
  3. Request a brief clarification and address the distraction.

Acknowledge the lapse without requesting a full replay

You heard that someone started woodworking, then a phone vibration distracted you. Ask which project they began with rather than asking them to repeat everything. Put the phone away instead of repeatedly apologising. If you cannot give attention at that moment, say so and suggest returning later. Honest limits are clearer than pretending the exchange is continuing normally.

A filled example

Worked repair: Sorry, my phone distracted me. I heard that you started woodworking but missed your first project. Could you repeat that part?

Evidence and scope

This is ordinary conversation repair, not a diagnosis of attention or health. Perfect sustained attention is not the standard.
