How do you choose a career sounding board without handing over the decision?

繁體中文版

The Weekend Club · Practical editorial guide · 2026-09-20

Choose someone for the question you need to clarify, and specify whether you want information, challenge or emotional support. Their perspective can inform the decision without owning it. Record advice separately from your constraints and make the final synthesis yourself.

Define the conversation's role

  1. Name one unresolved question.
  2. Find someone with relevant experience who is willing to talk.
  3. Explain the help you want, then distinguish checkable information from personal preferences.

Familiarity is not universal expertise

A friend may understand you well but know little about a target role. Ask them to notice constraints you overlook, while checking daily tasks with a practitioner. These contributions serve different purposes. You do not need a vote on which person is right, or permission from either person to form your own judgement.

A filled example

Worked opening: Please challenge my assumption about evening work rather than choose a career for me. Which practical conditions might I have missed?
