How do you distinguish finishing a course from understanding it?
Keep completion separate from what you can demonstrate. Watching a lesson records exposure. Choose a small task that does not copy its example, then note what you produced and where you needed prompts to identify a useful next step.
Add a performance field
- Retain the completion record.
- Choose an independent task aligned with your goal.
- Record the output, prompts and sticking points rather than compressing everything into one score.
Place the records side by side
After a spreadsheet lesson, categorise your own non-sensitive expense data. If you look up a function, record that honestly. It does not undo the completed lesson, but completing this one table also does not establish independent ability with every kind of dataset. Describe the actual task you attempted.
A filled example
Worked record: Lesson three watched; expense table created; date formatting required a reference. Next practice: sorting inconsistent date formats.
What to do with your observation
| Observation | Next action |
|---|---|
| Only the lesson is completed | Arrange a separate small task. |
| A task is completed with prompts | Record where support was needed. |
A worksheet you can use
Content encountered: __; independent task: __; output: __; prompts used: __; next gap: __.
Should I remove the completion tick?
No. Preserve the fact it represents and add ability evidence, instead of assigning two meanings to one field.
Evidence and scope
One small task cannot demonstrate comprehensive mastery or replace formal qualifications and domain-appropriate assessment.
