How do you agree decision rights in a small creative collaboration?
Define what a responsible person can decide, what needs joint confirmation and what happens without a reply. Assigned work is not blanket authority. Silence should not authorise publication, name use or added costs.
Map the boundaries before starting
- List decisions about content, layout, timing and release.
- Identify who proposes and who must confirm each.
- Agree a response window and a pause procedure.
Delegate details while reserving consequential changes
For a neighbourhood walking zine, the layout lead might adjust spacing but cannot add private stories or announce sales independently. If confirmation is missing at the deadline, keep the draft unpublished and identify the outstanding decision.
What to do with your observation
| Observation | Next action |
|---|---|
| Change falls within agreed authority | Proceed and record it. |
| Change creates publicity or commitments | Obtain explicit confirmation; pause without it. |
A worksheet you can use

Is assigning roles enough?
Check whether each role includes decision authority. Producing the file does not necessarily include approving release.
Evidence and scope
This tool supports informal collaboration; it does not replace formal rights, contracts or permissions.
The public introduction discusses process sharing. Not a full-book reading. Austin Kleon — Show Your Work!: public book introduction
