How do you invite people to bring a conversation object without assigning homework?

繁體中文版

The Weekend Club · Practical editorial guide · 2026-09-18

Explain that the object is only a conversation starter. It need not be expensive, rare or accompanied by slides. Allow a description instead, and make the round optional so preparation does not become a competition.

Give boundaries without grading

  1. State what you hope to explore.
  2. Offer an ordinary example.
  3. Specify size, time and the option to omit it. For everyday design, someone could bring a favourite cup or describe a comfortable handle without buying anything new.

Discuss choices rather than status

Ask when the person uses the object instead of demanding its price or private history. Describe valuable, fragile or sensitive items rather than passing them around. The object supports expression; it is not a test of taste, wealth or impressive storytelling.

A worksheet you can use

Purpose: __. Ordinary example: __. Preparation limit: __. Description option: __. Passing option: __. Prompt: __.

What if someone arrives empty-handed?

Honour the invitation: listening or describing is enough. Do not introduce a penalty on arrival.

Evidence and scope

This is an original editorial activity. Venue restrictions apply, and it is not a rule for every organised event.
