How do you answer an invitation when your schedule is still uncertain?

繁體中文版

The Weekend Club · Practical editorial guide · 2026-09-18

Say that you cannot confirm yet, give a realistic decision time and let the organiser allocate the place elsewhere. Avoid a vague “probably” that could be counted as a confirmed attendance.

Separate pending from confirmed

  1. Check the organiser's response deadline.
  2. State when your schedule will be known.
  3. If that is later, ask them not to hold a place. A work roster arriving Friday cannot satisfy a Wednesday headcount deadline without a separate agreement.

Send an actionable reply

Explain that you will know Friday lunchtime, that they should count without you on Wednesday, and that you can enquire later if space remains. Update at the promised time even if uncertainty continues. If a temporary hold is unavailable, accept that rather than making the organiser chase a decision.

A worksheet you can use

Organiser deadline: __. Decision time: __. Hold agreed: __. Update due: __. Final status: __.

Can I request one extra day?

You can ask, but the request is not an agreement until confirmed.

Evidence and scope

This is a private invitation response, not a waiting-list or cancellation entitlement. Ticketed events follow their terms.
