How do you show understanding without pretending to agree?

Restate the concern, not an invented motive

In a discussion about moving, ask whether commuting matters more than room size. That is easier to verify than declaring the other person afraid of change. Keep your summary to what they expressed and label uncertainty.

Add your reason after checking

Once corrected, explain your own concern, such as flexibility in the lease. Keep the disagreement about specific conditions. Agreement is not the test of successful listening. You can stop a conversation that becomes insulting or coercive.

What if they say I did not understand?

Ask which important distinction you missed and check again instead of arguing about your effort.
