Translate Experience for a Career-Change Resume
Translate internal industry language into understandable work, then connect it to the target role’s tasks. Keep titles and contribution scope accurate so a reader can see what you did, how you did it and why it matters.
Three practical steps
- Identify three main tasks in the target vacancy.
- Select relevant past work and unpack internal abbreviations.
- Ask a reader outside your former industry what contribution they understood.
Translate capability while preserving your actual role
Explain an internal system as a scheduling or customer process when accurate. Give results their period and scope. Put new practice or learning in its own category so observation remains distinct from ownership.
A filled example
Illustrative example: a restaurant-area supervisor describes cross-site scheduling and exception handling for an operations application. Internal project names become secondary to the actual work and responsibility.
What to do with your observation
| Observation | Next action |
|---|---|
| Only internal labels are visible | Explain the work and its purpose. |
| A required skill is new to you | State your learning or practice status separately. |
A worksheet you can use
Target task: ____; past work: ____; plain-language description: ____; my responsibility: ____; verifiable result: ____.
Should I copy every keyword from the vacancy?
Shared language can help, provided each description is supported by your own experience. Accuracy comes first.
Evidence and scope
The original examples and worksheets help organize a decision. Adapt them to your circumstances and verify specific conditions with the relevant provider.
