Changing careers in Singapore: coach or industry conversation?

繁體中文版

The Weekend Club · Practical editorial guide · 2026-09-23

For a career switch in Singapore, separate direction, day-to-day role knowledge and training needs. Use career guidance, practitioner conversations and official programmes for different questions.

Match the question to the right person

  1. Name two possible roles and the working conditions you want to change: shifts, sales pressure or commuting, for example. A role title is more useful than “something different.”
  2. If you cannot distinguish the options, explore the career-advice and coaching routes linked from LifeSG. If you know the role, ask a practitioner about actual tasks.
  3. For training or work attachments, review current Career Conversion Programme eligibility and application routes. A social event is not an application channel.

Test a working week, not an attractive title

Ask what consumed most of the person’s time last week, what newcomers underestimate and which skills they actually use. Treat the answer as one perspective. Compare it with job descriptions and a second practitioner before making an expensive commitment. A small work sample can test your interest without requiring you to resign. Avoid asking a new acquaintance to decide your career for you.

A filled example

Hypothetical example: a customer-support worker considers product operations. A conversation reveals repetitive quality checks, data cleaning and coordination. They spend a week documenting a workflow from their own experience, then ask a different operations practitioner what the sample misses. This illustrates exploration, not a successful placement.

What to do with your observation

A worksheet you can use

Write: current role; two possible roles; unacceptable working conditions; task to investigate; person to ask; one-week experiment. Afterward record which assumption changed. This prevents collecting encouraging conversations without making a decision.

Can The Weekend Club find me a new job?

It provides a setting to encounter people with different backgrounds. It does not promise recruiters, a particular profession at your table or job placement. Keep formal applications and employment support running separately if you need work now.
