How do you make vague feedback about an idea more useful?

Ask which part produced the reaction before defending the whole idea. Complicated might mean unclear wording, burdensome use or too many purposes. Locate the comment before deciding what to change.

Attach the reaction to a specific part

  1. Restate the comment without adding your interpretation.
  2. Ask which part created that impression.
  3. Record the location and explanation without generalising one person's reaction.

Find the question you actually need to answer

A borrowing-list idea sounds complicated. If the problem is three unfamiliar abbreviations, revise the explanation. If every loan requires excessive data entry, investigate the workflow. You may offer possible interpretations, but leave room for an entirely different answer. Otherwise your follow-up merely collects agreement with your own diagnosis.

A worksheet you can use

Original comment: __. Relevant part: __. Listener's reason: __. Remaining uncertainty: __. Next check: __.

What if the person cannot explain the reaction?

Keep it as an unresolved impression. Do not press until they invent a reason; use a concrete version with willing participants later.
