How do you observe street lettering as a small design exercise?

繁體中文版

The Weekend Club · Practical editorial guide · 2026-09-20

Choose one visible feature, such as spacing, direction or readability from a distance, and describe how it affects your reading. Do not copy branded lettering into your own work or infer a typeface's name or history from appearance alone.

Observe one feature at a time

  1. Select signs from a safe place where you may stop.
  2. Record the same feature and your viewing position.
  3. Use original words to try one variation and compare the result.

Describe before naming

A vertical menu has closely packed lines that merge visually from where you stand. Arrange three words of your own in two versions and vary their spacing. Record your reading experience without presenting it as a professional test or a result that applies to everyone. The exercise begins with a specific observation, not a claim of design expertise.

A filled example

Worked exercise: Closely spaced vertical lettering caught my attention. Arrange Rain, Book and Tea twice, changing only line spacing, then note which I find easier to distinguish.

Can I do this without typography vocabulary?

Yes. Describe width, spacing and density, then check technical terms through reliable references later.

Evidence and scope

Observe traffic and venue rules. Avoid making bystanders or private information the subject of photographs; this is not an accessibility assessment.
