How do two people practise together without one doing all the work?

The Weekend Club · Practical editorial guide · 2026-09-18

Define practitioner and observer roles, then exchange them after a complete attempt. The observer records specific actions or questions instead of taking over. The practitioner retains an opportunity to make corrections.

Make the roles concrete

  1. Choose a low-risk skill.
  2. Define one complete round.
  3. Give the observer one visible criterion. In a photography exercise, one person takes a picture while the other checks the agreed framing boundary, then they switch rather than letting the experienced person take every photograph.

Keep feedback separate from doing

After a round, let the practitioner identify a change before the observer adds notes. If a demonstration is needed, make it a separate short segment and return control afterwards. Speed is not the only criterion; each person should try the skill and identify a next question.

A worksheet you can use

Skill: __. Round: __. Observation criterion: __. Switch: __. Self-assessment: __. Notes: __. Next change: __.

What if abilities differ substantially?

Adjust difficulty and time by agreement without eliminating one person's practice opportunity.
