How do you request a bounded job-shadowing opportunity without creating unnecessary work?
Name the part of a role you want to understand and ask whether an appropriate public or permitted observation is possible. Let the host confirm scope, time and exclusions. Curiosity does not create a right to workplace access.
Narrow the request to one process
- State the task you want to observe.
- Suggest a short, adjustable interval.
- Make declining easy. To understand exhibition work, ask about a public tour or nonconfidential setup explanation rather than access to client meetings or internal files.
Record only permitted material
Do not record audio, photographs or client information without appropriate consent. Separate observation from interpretation in a short note afterwards. One visit reveals only part of a process and cannot represent an entire profession or every employer. Keep unanswered questions visible instead of filling the gaps with assumptions about daily work.

What if the person cannot host me?
Use public demonstrations, official role descriptions or open events. Do not pressure them to make exceptions.
