How do you ask a librarian for focused research help?

繁體中文版

The Weekend Club · Practical editorial guide · 2026-09-17

Explain the question, searches already attempted and type of material you need. Bring a specific gap instead of requesting every relevant book. This provides a starting point for useful assistance.

Prepare a short request

  1. State the question.
  2. List a few search terms and what they found.
  3. Describe language, period or format constraints. For a changing local market, explain that you found recent news but need maps or photographs from before redevelopment, and ask where to search for those materials.

Turn suggestions into another search

Record catalogue locations, access conditions and any appointments needed. Do not assume all collections are freely downloadable or that a librarian will complete the project for you. If a suggested source is unsuitable, describe the mismatch in a follow-up. A precise next search is a useful outcome even when no immediate answer appears.

A worksheet you can use
